The Art of Packing Light: One Shirt, Three Holiday Looks

The best holidays are rarely the ones weighed down by too much luggage.

Packing light creates space for spontaneity: an unexpected swim, a long lunch that becomes dinner or a last-minute invitation somewhere beautiful. The secret is not necessarily bringing fewer clothes, but choosing better ones—pieces that can move effortlessly between different moments.

A distinctive printed shirt can become one of the most versatile pieces in your suitcase. Worn open in the morning, relaxed during the day and buttoned for dinner, it can create three completely different looks without taking up any additional space.

Here is how to make one A.M.E. shirt work from sunrise to well after sunset.

Look One: The Journey

Holiday style begins before you arrive.

For the airport, train or drive along the coast, wear your shirt open over a simple white cotton T-shirt. Pair it with relaxed trousers or tailored drawstring pants in stone, sand or navy.

Keep the shirt untucked and roll the sleeves once or twice for an easy, unstructured look. Comfortable leather sandals, loafers or clean trainers complete the outfit.

The printed shirt introduces colour and personality while the neutral pieces keep everything understated. Once you arrive, remove the T-shirt underneath and the outfit immediately becomes lighter and more suited to the destination.

This is particularly useful when travelling between different temperatures. The shirt provides an extra layer without the weight or bulk of a jacket.

Look Two: The Day by the Water

Whether the destination is Sydney, Sardegna or somewhere yet to be discovered, a printed cotton shirt feels most at home near the water.

Wear it open over swim shorts, leaving the sleeves relaxed or casually rolled. Choose swimwear in a colour found within the print, or keep it simple with a neutral shade such as black, navy or cream.

The result should feel effortless rather than overly coordinated.

When it is time to leave the beach for lunch, button the shirt halfway and add a pair of sunglasses. You are immediately ready for a table overlooking the water without needing to return to your room and change.

Natural cotton makes an ideal holiday companion because it is breathable and comfortable against the skin. A handcrafted print also adds interest to a simple combination without requiring extra accessories.

Bare feet in the sand. Leather sandals for lunch. Nothing else is needed.

Look Three: Dinner After Sunset

A holiday dinner calls for a subtle change in attitude rather than an entirely new outfit.

Button the shirt and pair it with tailored trousers in white, cream, tobacco or deep navy. Wear it untucked for a relaxed Mediterranean silhouette, or tuck it in with a simple leather belt for somewhere more polished.

Finish the look with loafers or refined leather sandals. A watch and a discreet piece of jewellery can be added, but allow the shirt to remain the focus.

The small details become more noticeable in this setting: the texture of the cotton, the coconut-wood buttons and the slight variations created through the hand-printing process.

It feels considered, but never overly formal—the balance required for an evening that begins with aperitivo and ends whenever it chooses.

A More Considered Suitcase

Building a travel wardrobe around versatile pieces makes getting dressed simpler and leaves more room for the things collected along the way.

Alongside your printed shirt, pack:

  • One white cotton T-shirt
  • One pair of neutral tailored trousers
  • One pair of swim shorts
  • One pair of relaxed shorts
  • Leather sandals or loafers
  • Clean, comfortable trainers

With this small foundation, the same shirt can accompany you through the journey, the beach, lunch, drinks and dinner.

Each A.M.E. print was created in a limited run of 60 shirts and handcrafted in a small family-run studio in Jaipur. Natural cotton, botanical dyes, coconut-wood buttons and carefully finished seams make every piece distinctive.

Designed in Sydney and shaped by Italian roots and a love of travel, an A.M.E. shirt is made for more than one destination—or one way of wearing it.
